Range and interval

The chart shows the symbol picked in the quote header. The control bar at the top, labelled Chart:, has two drop-downs:

  • History: how far back to load, from 1 Day to 5 Year.
  • Interval: how much time each candle covers, from 1 Minute to 1 Week. Only intervals that make sense for the chosen history are offered.

At the right of the bar, 💾 saves the loaded candles to a file and ⛶ opens the chart full screen with all its controls.

Indicators

The Indicator: row above the chart picks what is drawn over the candles. Your choice is remembered.

  • MA (Moving Averages): the 5, 50 and 200-period moving averages of the close. The period is the candle interval, so on daily candles these are 5, 50 and 200-day averages.
  • TBO (TBO Trend Cloud): a fast and a slow trend line with a cloud between volatility bands, coloured by trend regime: Bull (teal), Neutral (grey) or Bear (purple). The current regime is shown at the top left of the chart. The scanner uses the same TBO calculation.

Below the price pane are panes for volume, MACD and RSI(14). On short windows the lower panes shrink or drop so the price pane keeps at least half the height.

The expected-move cone

The EM button draws a cone in the space to the right of the last candle. It shows how far the options market expects the price could move over about the next 21 days:

  • It opens at the latest close and widens over time, reaching ±1σ (one standard deviation) at the horizon: about 68% of outcomes fall inside.
  • A dashed outer band marks ±2σ, about 95% of outcomes.
  • The horizon is labelled with its days and date, such as 18D Sep 25.

The move comes from the implied volatility of the expiration closest to 21 days out, the same figure as the IV21 segment of the volatility meter. Once it's priced, the button itself shows the 1σ move as a percent, such as EM ±6.2%; hover over it for the expiration, the dollar move, the price range and the IV used.

The cone is drawn on daily and longer candles only. On hourly or minute candles, 21 days would be far wider than the room to the right of the chart, so the button still shows the move but no cone is drawn.

The cone is a statistical range implied by option prices, not a forecast.

Break-even bars

When you hold shares of the charted stock, the BE button (next to EM, on by default) adds a narrow column beyond the price axis. It holds one thin coloured bar per share tranche, on the same price scale as the candles, so you can see at a glance where the price stands against each tranche. Each bar rises from the tranche's break-even to its cost:

MarkMeaning
●Break-even: cost per share less the premium the tranche has already collected.
Solid barBetween break-even and cost: a call struck here still makes a profit overall if assigned.
■Cost per share. Above it, the shares themselves are in profit.
◆Your open short calls on the tranche at that strike, with the number of contracts, all expirations added together. A red outline means the strike is below break-even.
Dotted tailJoins the bar to calls outside it, usually above cost.
▲ / ▼The whole bar is above or below the prices in view. Zoom out or pan to see it.

The bars follow the same rules as the tranche lanes in the options table: each account has its own colour (blue, green, amber, purple, teal), with a lighter shade for each further tranche; fully covered tranches are faded; and at most 6 bars are drawn. The bars never change the chart's zoom, so a far-off break-even doesn't squash the candles.

Details

On a computer, hover over a bar to see dashed lines across the chart at its break-even and cost, and a box with the account, shares and cost, break-even, Avail CC (covered calls it can still sell), calls open, its short calls, and how far the price is from break-even, such as Price 3.2% above break-even. Clicking pins it. On a phone or tablet, tap or long-press a bar; the details stay until you tap the bar again or tap elsewhere on the chart.

No bars? They appear only when there's something to draw. Check that the BE button is on, and that you hold at least 100 shares of this stock in one tranche, in any account, live or imported. Cash-secured puts and calls you own don't get a bar.

Moving around the chart

ToOn a computerOn a touch screen
Zoom time in or outScroll wheel over the chartPinch horizontally
Zoom the price scaleDrag up or down on the price axisPinch vertically
PanDrag the chartDrag with one finger; flick to coast
Reset the price scaleDouble-click the price axisDouble-tap the price axis
Read a candleHover for a crosshair with price and dateLong-press, then slide along the candles

Long-pressing shows a box for the candle under your finger with its date, open, high, low, close, change and volume. Resetting the price scale fits it to the candles in view; it doesn't change the time zoom.
